It Is September Every Day In My World

I love finals footy. The nerves, the noise, the feeling that every contest matters. Nothing beats being at the ground, especially when you have made the interstate trip—the early flight, the away jumper in enemy territory, and that first wall of sound when the siren goes. That same energy is how I serve my clients. It is September every day, with one important difference: my clients are always on the winning team.
Here is how my AFL finals brain shows up in the way I work as an Outsourced CFO:
Scoreboard obsession
In finals, you watch the scoreboard like a hawk. In business, the scoreboard are your profit centres, your budget versus actuals, and last month versus the month before. We build dashboards that make performance obvious, not mysterious.
Quarter-time huddles
Premierships are won by teams that adjust. Monthly reviews are our huddles. We look at what is working, what is not, and what needs changing before the next quarter. Real conversations, real decisions, real actions.
Selection table discipline
Coaches pick roles for impact, not sentiment. We do the same with spending and focus. If a cost does not help you win, it is benched. If a product line is kicking goals, we feed it the ball.
Game plan you can actually run
Finals sides do not take a static playbook into a live contest. We build dynamic cash flow projections and rolling forecasts reviewed regularly. They move with your reality so you can make confident calls, not hopeful wishes.
Match review, not blame
The best teams own their stats. We measure by profit centre, compare against budget and prior periods, and learn fast. No finger-pointing, just “what did the numbers tell us and what will we do next”.
Systems that stick under pressure
Skills matter, but systems win when the heat is on. Clean data, timely reporting, clear responsibilities. The right people in the right roles so your numbers story is accurate and on time.
